Mary sees a strong connection between the colors and designs in both her acrylic paintings and her claywork. She loves working with color, whether it’s blending glazes on a piece of clay or applying acrylic paints on a canvas. Currently, she aims for a more impressionistic style with her landscape-based paintings, focusing on creating a mood through the use of light. In her glazed pieces, she experiments with up to five glazes, utilizing the kiln’s heat and “firing down” technique to achieve various results and colors that reflect light. Mary often works in cycles throughout her art practice, exploring a process or idea with clay and then shifting to 2D canvas for several weeks. She can’t say that she prefers one medium over the other switching between them keeps her inspired.
